Explore Corkscrew’s Habitats

Guests who have stay in one of our beach houses will enjoy the six different habitats at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.  They include:

1. Cypress Swamps

Swamps are forested wetlands covering approximately 10% of the land area in Florida. These forests often grow in long flooded depressions in the landscape called strands and are dominated primarily by Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum).

2. Oak Hammocks

Commonly found wildlife in hammock habitats includes Black Bears, Florida Panthers, Bobcats, Pigmy Rattlesnakes, Florida Box Turtles, Red-shouldered Hawks, and Barred Owls.
Hammocks are well-developed evergreen hardwood and palm forests, which grow on soils that are rarely inundated. They often occur as “islands” of high ground within wetland habitats. Soils are sandy and mixed with organic matter from leaf litter.

3. Pine Flatwoods

Pine flatwoods provide important habitat for many wildlife species. Pine flatwoods represent the most extensive type of terrestrial ecosystem in Florida, covering approximately 50% of the natural land area. These forests are dominated by Southern Slash Pine (Pinus elliotti var. densa) and interspersed Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), with an understory of mostly Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) and mixed grasses.

4. Swamp Ponds & Lakes

Florida’s wetlands are often pockmarked with basins or depressions that fill with water to create generally permanent bodies of water (although water levels often fluctuate substantially and ponds may become completely dry). The basins that form these ponds and small lakes can be the result of erosion of the underlying bedrock, period fires that burn deep into the organic soil of cypress swamps, and even the wallowing activity of the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

5. Wet Prairies

Wet prairie is a habitat found in flat or gently sloping areas with wet, but not inundated, soils. The length of time that soils are flooded ranges from 3-7 months each year. Often wet prairie is found between lower lying depression marshes or swamps and slightly higher pine flatwoods. Natural fires enter wet prairies from surrounding pine flatwoods and help prevent the establishment of cypress (Taxodium spp.) from adjacent swamps.
